We acknowledge that our community gathers on land within Treaty Six territory and the Métis Nation Homeland known as amiskwaciwâskahikan, or Edmonton. It is the traditional gathering place of many First Nations, including the Nehiyaw (Cree), Denesuliné (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishnaabe (Saulteaux) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot).
We acknowledge that we are all treaty people and that this land has offered us an abundance of shelter, nurture and sustenance. Our HLSA community has made many memories on this land for generations of home educating families. These gatherings have given young people and their families an opportunity to make meaningful connections and long lasting relationships.
While HLSA’s mission is to be a welcoming space for a diverse group of home educating families, we acknowledge that we have not been intentional in creating a safe and welcoming space for Indigenous families. As part of reconciliation, we are committed to doing better, “as long as the sun shines, the rivers flow and the grass grows.”
